Early life and education

Upon his reentry into the company, Jobs took decisive actions to revitalize Apple, which was struggling under the weight of poor product sales and an unclear strategy. He believed in Pixar’s potential and poured $50 million of his own money into the company, nurturing it into a leader in animated film production. By 1985, Apple’s executives had sidelined Jobs, ultimately leading to his departure from the company he co-founded. In 1983, Jobs recruited marketing expert John Sculley to become Apple’s CEO, but as the company continued to struggle, tensions mounted between the two. Their first product, the Apple I, garnered significant attention, achieving sales of around $774,000, while the subsequent Apple II secured the company a staggering $139 million in revenue.

By March 1976, Wozniak completed the basic design of the Apple I computer and showed it to Jobs, who suggested that they sell it; Wozniak was at first skeptical of the idea but later agreed. Jobs returned to Atari in early 1975, and that summer, Bushnell assigned him to create a circuit board for the arcade video game Breakout in as few chips as possible, knowing that Jobs would recruit Wozniak for help. He considered taking up monastic residence at Eihei-ji in Japan, and maintained a lifelong appreciation for Zen, Japanese cuisine, and artists such as Hasui Kawase. During this time period, Jobs and Brennan both became practitioners of Zen Buddhism through the Zen master Kōbun Chino Otogawa.

Harwell, the longtime frontman of the Grammy-nominated pop rock band Smash Mouth, has died. Jobs had health problems for the last few years of his life. He concentrated on making the company profitable again. Apple’s 1997 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded. He also became a member of the Disney board of directors. He then started NeXT, a computer platform development company.

Iger wrote, “Who wouldn’t want Steve Jobs to have influence over how a company is run?”, and that as an active Disney board member “he rarely created trouble for me. Not never but rarely.” He speculated that they would have seriously considered merging Disney and Apple had Jobs lived. Though frustrated with the company’s and Jobs’s dismissal of the Apple II in favor of the Macintosh, Wozniak left amicably and remained an honorary employee of Apple, maintaining a lifelong friendship with Jobs. The two decided on the name “Apple” after Jobs returned from the All One Farm commune in Oregon and told Wozniak about his time in the farm’s apple orchard. During his day job at HP, Wozniak drew sketches of the circuit design; at night, he joined Jobs at Atari and continued to refine the design, which Jobs implemented on a breadboard. During this time, Jobs experimented with psychedelics, later calling his LSD experiences “one of the two or three most important things he had done in his life”. According to Wozniak, Atari only hired Jobs because he took the board down to the company, and they thought that he had built it himself.

Anecdotally, though, it does appear less frequently than the aurora, but we aren’t sure why. Now that we’re studying STEVE more, we may discover it’s not very rare at all, just like the aurora. Physically, STEVE is created by heated gas that glows, whereas the aurora is created by charged particles that glow.
